THE HIEROPHANT


*TO BE RULED BY THE CONVENTIONAL*

+ Here is the symbol of Mercy, a Religious and Spiritual Person. Humitily and Kindnes, Leniancy and Compassion. A Person to whom other people go for help. Servitude; ritual Conformity and forgiveness.

-Overkindess; The foolish exersixe of gernerosity, fraility aslo unorthodoxy or unconventional

INTERPRETATION: Need to conform. The inportance of being socially approved. Expecially by one's own group. Bondage to the conventions of society. Preferance for other forms of religion.

REVERSED; Unconventionality, unorthodoxy. take care not to become superstitious. the card of the inventor as well and the nonconformist youth

FUTURE: The seeker will feel the need to conform to to morals and manners of society. He will like to go to church, "just for the music" or to please his parents or the people downt the street.

PAST: The attitue is already characterisits of the Seeker. bu tif the Hanged Man or other spiriutal cards come up in the futre, it is safe to predict that the present attitue will change to one of more openess to spiritual ideas.

REVERSE: The card indicated unconventuality liek that of hte young people today. There is a warning here that the Skeeer is delving into the Occult and she should avoice becoming superstitious and seeing signs and portents in everything around him.

DESCRIPTION: It was the Hierophant who was the master of the Eleusianian mysteries, rites that were held once a year near Athens.
Here the Hierophant is seated between pillars repeating the theme of duality, as in the card of the High Priestess. He wears the triple crown of a pope, the symbol of Three is repeeated in his staff to indicate his rule over the creative, formative and material worlds. The garments of the kneeling monks are decorated with te white lilties of abstract though are the red roses of desire. Between them are the crossed keys, the keys of the kingdom-one, gold for the sun and the superconsious, the other sliver for the moon and the subconcous.
The Hierophant represents the traditional, orthodox teaching considered suitable for teh masses therfore, he is ruling power of external religion.
